The battle of who can be crowned this year’s most provocative pop princess
is well and truly on. Hot on the 15cm platform heels of Lady Gaga‘s
sweeping success Down Under is the girl
who kissed a girl and liked it: Katy Perry.
Perry, 24, arrives in Australia later this month to perform her first big time tour,
and many are asking if she can follow Gaga’s success.
When Lady Gaga, 23, opened for the Pussycat Dolls in May,
many claimed she was the highlight and the Dolls were left looking like amateurs.
But Perry has no fear when it comes to facing Sydney crowds.
“I like playing live, because there are a lot of things that can happen.
I can interact with the audience and say some things to get me in trouble,”
she has said.
There’s no denying the similarity of these two young women, who have made such an impact
on the celebrity, music and style scenes.
Known for her mix of kitsch ’40s red-lipped glamour and the odd fruit-shaped accessory,
Katy Perry may not be quite as out there fashion-wise as Gaga
but she certainly knows how to rock an outfit and loves a leotard.
“There are definitely flavours of that 1940s pin-up in how I dress,”
Perry has said.
“I feel like I’m completely fearless. I never really play it safe.”
But raunchy lyrics and risque outfits can do only so much, and both artists will eventually
be judged on sales.
Lady Gaga’s debut album topped the charts in six countries, and her latest single,
Paparazzi is getting huge airplay.
For Perry, her breakthrough single, I Kissed A Girl topped the charts in more than 30 countries
and, thanks to her incredibly successful tour, her first mainstream album, One Of The Boys,
is racing back up the album charts in the US and has gone platinum.
“Some of the things on my (debut) record were from a five-year span,”
she said, expressing the need to update her sound and make it more mature.
With a debut album each under their belts the questions `can they do it again?’ has to be asked.
